Dr Abdulbaki Turkmenoglu

Copyright & artificial intelligence

Write to us

Dr Abdulbaki Turkmenoglu is a Turkish-qualified lawyer registered with the Istanbul Bar Association and a legal scholar whose research sits where copyright law meets machine learning: who owns what a model produces, what happens legally when a work is used as training data, and how licensing has to change to accommodate both.

He read law at Istanbul University, took his master's degree at Queen Mary University of London, and completed his doctorate at the University of Birmingham. His doctoral research addressed authorship and originality in works produced with artificial intelligence.

He advises creators, publishers, studios and technology businesses on copyright ownership, training data and text and data mining, licensing and rights clearance, and the governance questions that arrive with deploying an AI system. He also acts on general intellectual property and contract matters under Turkish law.
